ISO 9001:2026 is expected to be published around September 2026, replacing ISO 9001:2015 (including the 2024 climate change amendment). Why ISO 9001 is being revised now

The revision process involved extensive global input. After committee drafts, the Draft International Standard (DIS), and the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS), the final text is on track for publication in autumn 2026. The structure remains familiar — still based on the process approach and Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, with the same high-level clause numbering that supports integration with standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO/IEC 27001. The main updates focus on clarity, emphasis, and usability.
1. Stronger leadership, quality culture, and ethical behaviour
Top management responsibilities expand. Leaders must actively promote a quality culture and ethical behaviour (primarily in Clause 5.1). Awareness requirements (Clause 7.3) now include these elements so people working under the organization’s control understand the expected culture. This is not about creating new paperwork; it is about making culture and ethics visible in how decisions are made and how people behave day to day.
2. Clearer separation of risks and opportunities
Previously, risks and opportunities were often treated together, and many organizations focused more on risks. The 2026 version separates them more distinctly (typically into dedicated sub-clauses under planning). This encourages balanced attention: managing threats while deliberately pursuing opportunities that support quality objectives and strategic direction.
3. Climate change considerations fully integrated
The 2024 amendment required organizations to consider whether climate change is a relevant issue in their context (Clause 4.1) and related interested-party needs. This is now embedded in the main text of ISO 9001:2026 rather than sitting as a separate amendment. Organizations already addressing it will find continuity; those that have not yet done so will need to document their determination.

What does not change significantly: the process approach, risk-based thinking at its core, customer focus, the need for documented information where it adds value, internal audit, management review, and continual improvement. If your current system is well implemented and effective, the transition should feel evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Train key people — Brief leadership, process owners, and internal auditors on the clarified requirements and new emphases. Industry-specific scenarios (like those above) make training more relevant.
Integrate with other systems — Take advantage of the Harmonized Structure if you hold multiple certifications.
Plan the audit timing — Discuss transition options with your certification body so the upgrade can occur efficiently during a planned audit.
